Falmouth, Massachusetts, occupies a broad section of Cape Cod’s southwestern coast, with shorelines facing both Vineyard Sound and Buzzards Bay. The town includes several distinct villages, including Woods Hole, Falmouth Village, North Falmouth, and West Falmouth, each contributing to its coastal identity. Beaches, harbors, salt marshes, wooded areas, and freshwater ponds shape the landscape, while ferry connections provide access toward Martha’s Vineyard. Falmouth is also notable for its concentration of marine research institutions in Woods Hole, giving the community an unusual connection between coastal recreation, science, and maritime traditions.

Falmouth’s cultural history begins with the Wampanoag people, whose place names remain part of the local landscape. Later settlement brought farming, fishing, whaling, salt production, and other maritime industries, leaving behind historic homes, working waterfronts, and village centers. Woods Hole eventually became an important center for marine science, with institutions including the Marine Biological Laboratory and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The town is also associated with poet Katharine Lee Bates, whose birthplace is commemorated locally and whose famous poem inspired the name of the Shining Sea Bikeway. These connections give Falmouth a cultural identity rooted in both land and sea.

The Shining Sea Bikeway is one of Falmouth’s defining attractions, following a former railroad route for 10.7 miles between North Falmouth and Woods Hole. It passes salt marshes, cranberry bogs, ponds, woodlands, beaches, and working harbor areas, offering views across Vineyard Sound and Buzzards Bay. Other notable places include Nobska Lighthouse overlooking Woods Hole, Falmouth Heights Beach, Old Silver Beach, and the Woods Hole Science Aquarium. The town’s coastal setting also supports sailing, kayaking, fishing, swimming, and walking along beaches and conservation areas, while nearby Martha’s Vineyard can be reached by ferry from Woods Hole.

Seafood is central to Falmouth’s food traditions, with local restaurants serving oysters, clams, scallops, lobster, and fish associated with the surrounding waters. Cranberries also have a long agricultural connection to the area, and working cranberry bogs can still be seen from the Shining Sea Bikeway. Quahogs, or hard-shell clams, are another local food with deep cultural significance and were important to the Wampanoag people. A distinctive feature of Falmouth is the way marine science is woven into everyday life: Woods Hole hosts major research organizations studying oceans, marine organisms, fisheries, geology, and climate, making scientific work a visible part of the community.
